lio rush and darby are also good aew examples for me. theyre gonna be wrestling guys bigger than them 90% of the time, and it just wouldnt be very interesting if they wrestled in the same style as their opponents. lio outspeeds them and darby out-crazies them instead
Darby's craziness ends up hiding the fact he can actually wrestle and his craftiness. I think people assume he does crazy shit just to do it, but there's a method to it. He's well aware of what he's doing & the effect it will have on him & his opponent.
Lio also moves in a way that no one else does. A lot of smaller guys go the acrobatic route, and while he can, I always think of that 90 degree juke he does around bigger guys. No flash, no flourish, he just changes directions in a way that his opponent can't.
Lio is like smoke to me. Like you said his change of direction with his speed is lethal. Even when he's wrestling guys his size or other high flyers they have issues catching him. It's truly like watching his opponents trying to catch smoke.
I know I exactly what he's getting at too. Moxely isn't a technical wrestler, he doesn't do flips, he's a brawler, a hard ass. There's no reason for him to be good at those other things, it isn't necessary and would actually work against his character.
I'm with Murder Grandpa. Give me a guy who's fucking great at Doing His Thing.
Like, if I want to watch a surprisingly intimidating old Japanese man just beat the absolute piss out of somebody for several minutes with elbows and forearms, I'm gonna watch Suzuki.
There's a reason that, once I get the scratch together to get to wrestling school, I'm going to avoid trying to flip and instead work on basing. I know my limits.
YES and I feel like a lot of wrestlers who are technically gifted I can’t find myself to care much for because they also don’t understand themselves as characters or performers. if all you can say about yourself is “I’m really good” then buddy get in line because there’s 100+ people like that

Mox was the feral goblin that Regal found and raised into a punchy bitey boy.
Danielson was Regal's favorite child and a technical master.
Mox picked up a thing to two from Bryan, but he still wants to just fuck people up
