Chamberlain was well cast as Aramis in THE FOUR MUSKETEERS, 1974, which is a terrific film, the middle of Richard Lester's Musketeers trilogy.

Thornbirds is probably banned. I mean, what theocracy wants a book talking about how the rules don't apply to those in power. On the other hand, he got what he wanted, and we are still supposed to feel sorry for him! So, no, this one probably made him lots of fans, but it does not hold up.

The Thorn Birds does. Netflix used to have the DVDs and I rented it 10 years ago. Weird to see the commercial breaks though. I'm surprised Hollywood isn't trying to remake it like they did with Shogun. The book is still amazing.

I've not seen Shogun since it's original run, but I still remember the title music. That must count for something.

I rewatched The Last Wave recently, and that's still a great film and a great performance by Richard Chamberlain.

I remember watching Shogun with the whole family. My mom had a Japanese pen pal that she communicated with from 1950's until she got dementia(it was some program to facilitate understanding between American & Japanese kids)We visited in '78, for which she learned to speak Japanese.

You and I must be related because my Mom was the same back in the 70's. She loved Richard Chamberlain (and Tom Selleck until he started pushing reverse mortgages on TV) and we all watched Shogun and The Thorn Birds when they were released. Even Dad thought he was alright which was saying something.

In anticipation for the current version of Shogun, I watched the original just so I could compare the changes. I love the new version with the emphasis on the Japanese characters, but given the book's focus on Blackthorne, Chamberlain's performance held up well. RIP Mr Chamberlain
