Fire Mutual Aid in California is like no other operation on the planet. It, along with the Incident Command System, was created in response to the devastating SoCal wildfires in 1970. It is used extensively every year.

The Incident Command system is now used by FEMA nationwide for disasters, part of the tremendous improvement in disaster response over the past decades. We've used it here in RI for hurricanes etc. It's certainly showing its value in these fires.

I think you’re talking about prison labor and it’s a debatable point whether or not they should be used. But it is worth noting they are all volunteers who do, in fact, get paid a modest (too modest) wage. Calling them “slaves” denies their agency as people actually trying to help.

They are not slaves; it's a voluntary program that trains them as firefighters so when they get out they can get good-paying jobs in the field. I agree they should be better-paid for hazardous work. But this is not "slavery" like some other prison work details are.

There is an incentive in place for the government to jail people and with long sentences to provide this workforce. It also “pays” 5 bucks a day. That ain’t a wage, it commissary change. It is slavery. The government needs prisoners to keep the program going. It’s a bad thing not a good thing.

My town’s fire fighters are helping. As are other Sonoma county fire teams.
We remember how the fire fighters from Southern Cal showed up for us in the horrific fires of 2017 here.

Heard earlier that some knucklehead flew a drone that collided with one of the planes. Sustained wing damage and is grounded. We were told it can scoop up more than 1,500 gallons of water (ocean water). There's always an idiot out there mucking things up. Just what the folks here needed. 😠

I don't think many people understand or respect the monumental efforts firefighters make when fighting fires and trying to save lives and property. I've seen entire neighborhoods in my home town devastated by a brush fire where the firefighters saved every home while everything else was burned.

Yup. When I was a kid our next door neighbor was a firefighter for the state. They used to live way out in the nearest forest (not close) for months at a time in summer to be there in case there was a fire. They sacrifice much to keep us safe.

I think the reporting that there were only 250 firefighters on the first day, really did a lot to spread conspiracy theories about inadequate response. I'm surprised there are not more volunteer squads in place in various cities within the county, in Colorado they are often the first on scene.

My understanding is that a lot of what FEMA provides is the coordination, logistics, making sure all the agencies have interoperable radios, etc. etc. If Project 2025 succeeds in destroying FEMA and just telling the states "good luck with that," it won't happen as well or as smoothly.

In addition to people coming from other states and countries (I see you, Canda and Mexico), there are a lot of National Guard and inmate units out there and people who aren't generally part of the LAFD and it's got to be crucial to have them all able to communicate and work together.
