Folks won’t cancel travel to conferences already paid for. It’s the next conf they won’t attend. I canceled on an economics conf in Seattle in May where I was to be a keynote, and didn’t register for any other US confs in 2025. US acad socs aren’t the problem, but they’ll share the pain unfort’ly.

I want everyone, but especially the Canadians to stand firm against Trump. Whatever sticks a finger in his eye is good. Nearly all researchers here are with you and boycotting American conferences may be part of the answer. However, the resulting isolation of American fellows in arms is troubling.

I don’t blame them. With all the NIH and CDC grants being cancelled, I think attendance at a lot of conferences in the US and international will be substantially lower. If people can’t afford travel, I wonder if some conferences will go back to being virtual like they were during COVID.

Have conferences in Canada. Have the USA scientists come to you. Too much drama in the USA at the moment and scientists need to focus on more important things than politics.
