Walter Hill had this gumbo of 40’s noir, Yojimbo, Dusty old west aesthetics and the double fisted HK gunplay, and it all comes together so well with Bruce doing his best Bogart and Mitchum.
This didn’t hit for me when it first came out, but I’ve been meaning to give it a rewatch for the last 20+ years. All the ingredients are there for a really great film. Also, I remember thinking that would be a really great title for a film I’d one day make, and then they beat me to the punch.
I remember going to see it in the theater on my on and absolutely losing it. It’s SO good. The sound effects for the .45s sounded like hammers hitting anvils.
Love. It.
