The catalyst for me applying for and earning my Ph.D. was the REU program. Without it, I would have never known that research was incredibly valuable, rewarding, and, most of all, incredibly useful.

For more than a decade, we have been offering REU experience to more than a dozen students every year. Many of them have gone on to finish their graduate, doctoral program and beyond. If it is scraped and downgraded, it would be a shame because it is a symbiotic experience for us.

I didn’t become a scientist, but I did become a software engineer the minute I returned from my NSF REU program at UIowa writing code for VR simulations. Discovering and then solving problems is the most wonderful feeling of accomplishment that it’s driven my entire career for the 25+ years since.

My first coding was in very, very Basic. Then I switched to FORTRAN 4, followed by later versions. I still feel uncomfortable writing coding (in very different languages!) without continue statements!

Fortran IV was my first language, used in my degree course, which I started in 1979. I still have the textbook on my desk to show the youngsters I work with what a real programming language looks like 😁
