Yes, but to be fair, only in a part of Bavaria. I'm from Northern Bavaria and I don't understand a word, if someone from the South starts to speak Bavarian. There are many dialects in Bavaria, one of them Bavarian. Same in Austria.

apart from the Franconian area in the north and Swabian in the west they are all considered "Bavarian"
(even though in my own experience people from (near) Dachau and (near) Erding don't necessarily always understand each other even though it's just a short drive.)

Well yes, and apart from Oberpfalz where they speak pfälzerisch. But look at a map. That's 5 out of seven Regierungsbezirke that don't speak Bavarian. And area wise there's about a much fränkisch as bavarian.

I have a few friends from Weiden and area and as far as I know, they speak Oberpfälzerisch, but I'm not really an expert in that area.

Y'all, I only had 4 yrs of German in high school, 3 of which were taught by an angry man from Bielefeld who hated his job & us and was phoning it in until he made it to retirement. The final year we had an American/Filipino woman who was *appalled* at our lack of knowledge.

Oh Bielefeld (the City that doesn't exist), I worked there a while at the dialysis center... which is completely irrelevant to the original question on how to pronounce Spätzle!
English teacher at school was german and not better in english then I am now. I try and hope you all will understand! 😅

This can happen to you in any corner of Germany, not only Bavaria. 😅 I drive to my (step)grandparents' house for a maximum of two hours, and when they speak dialect, I don't understand a word, so my younger sister (who grew up there) has to translate!🤣🤣🤣

Sorry but I had family that was very into Bavarian history and language academically and I had to suffer through too many lengthy coffee table lectures about the cultural impact and how Bavarian should get protected status etc. (Guess some of it got stuck in my migraine brain today)
