I obviously don't know Bragg's family, but personally I'd feel insulted for my family member's name to be used like this. He's not being honored—they pulled his name out of a list of alternatives to intentionally associate him with a confederate traitor and slaver. - ThreadSky

That's not to insult him; there was an actual process here. In 2022, the Naming Commission published a Final Report to Congress on proposed names to replace Bragg and other voluntary confederates. The full report is available online

The criteria to be chosen as a potential name included that the person distinguished themselves in service, that the passage of time show them to be "assessed in a larger context of history," and hopefully that they were affiliated with the particular base

The Commission received thousands of suggestions for Fort Bragg alone. Reduced this list to about 461 "high caliber" candidates, then added some more criteria to reduce it further by reviewing details and context of the acts of valor (among other things). Eventually reduced to 90—10 for each base.

By now you know that the top recommendation was Liberty—part of an alternate proposal to list non-individual names emphasizing values or locations—but Roland Bragg was not on the recommended list. And it's hard to dispute that any of the people on that list deserved it.

Let me pause here to point out that among the reasons that the Commission chose to rename Fort Bragg was because Braxton Bragg "is considered one of the worst generals of the Civil War; most of the battles he was involved in ended in defeat and resulted in tremendous losses for the Confederate Army"

The camp naming commission in WW1 was snarky as hell. They trolled throughout the South, naming the large camp in Montgomery, AL after Phil Sheridan, which caused great consternation among the Lost Causers. They named the camp in Anniston after McClellan.

I was stationed at two army bases named after traitors. Annoyed me every time I drove onto base 🤬
