We need more considered, human conversation on asylum. My mother was a bigot & a racist. Her heroes were Powell & Thatcher. She would cheer on racist immigration speeches in which immigrants featured dehumanised, shadowy figures. She didn't know any immigrants, or even black people.

If you told her a story that humanised people, showing the true nature of their situation, she would empathise and say we should help them.
Of course it is not that simple, she had a remarkable ability to shield her core beliefs from revision. But she could be swung on specific policies.

Did you ask the French authorities why they let such a vulnerable boy live on a rubbish tip? After all, they are a very rich country at the heart of the compassionate EU. And I'm sure, with the French health service regarded as the best in the world, a French doctor could have treated him.
