But seriously. Is it set in England? Also, why does it need to be? Here are some basic statistics: less than 1% of the world's population lives in England, and in the Anglophile world, only about 20% of English speakers have this accent.

I can't find statistics, but anecdotally, the number of games that are either a) set in on .05% of the Earth's surface or b) predominantly feature cultural norms from the UK (accents, clothing, traditions, myths, etc.) seems overwhelming and sets this one cultural as the standard norm of society.

I know one can argue a lot of games aren't, but a LOT of games are functionally British. A LOT.

Why is this? Because between the 16th and 20th centuries, the British Empire spread across the globe and did so using muskets, cannons, naval force, economics, and, yes, physical and cultural genocide.

My home country, the US, continues this trend and utilizes militaristic expansion, cultural norms, and many other modern equivalents of imperial expansionism. So, the forces of capital that support and promote games continue these trends, just as they do in movies, television, books, music, etc.

It is easier and more profitable in the short term to conform to these "traditional" trends and not propose alternatives (as profitable as they would ultimately be). However, I think the rise of East Asian stories, mythologies, and cultural products is showing at least a temporary new direction.
