When inescapable game actions hurt you, it feels bad. So I got Niv-Mizzet online, and he was then surprised when every bit of card draw damage I could do was directed his way. (Neither of us won, but winning wasn't the point by the time I started throwing ping sand in his eyes.)

I have a Mogis deck that is designed to deal inescapable damage that way. It only gets played in pods where it’s encouraged or I’m being petty because someone else is being a jerk.

Being able to counter an asshole deck is so gratifying. I won one FNM where a guy with an asshole blue counter deck was dominating. I kept baiting out his counters with cheap spells and then Fireballing him in the face. Dude never came back 😂

I started playing at a time when Standard was really friendly to prison decks.

Prison decks are horrible to play against, and people who build prison decks tend not to be very friendly to new girls at FNM. Years later, I’m still squirrly about mono-blue and control players.

I only play kitchen table with my friends haha I couldn’t even begin to guess the power range of my decks. Probably something along the lines of “bad, slow, unpredictable, and the deeply annoying one”

Someone made an entire manga series about a little girl who inherited a deck like that from her mom. Her deck was seemingly stupid, simple, and useless...but it basically was the least fun deck to play against in the entire world, and it was all she had to remember her mom by so she used it anyways.

Maybe an unpopular opinion coming from an og 60 card player, but underworld dreams and effects like it are fine. Most things are fine. Once. They speed up the game, so the feel bads will pass. Then you try to get another game in, and ask them to play another deck.

If the ban list is going to allow so many things we have to have the expectation that there will be un fun games. We can't control that. But we can learn from them, improve our decks construction (not skill, just adapting), and communicate our needs.

There are a million strategies in magic, and a lot of them aren't fun to have happen to you, so sometimes we've got to endure a bad game and do what we can to make the next one better. Which is, like, a million times tougher with random at your lgs, but non-games are part of the experience.

I feel like that's always a tricky line in deck building since yeah you do want to win with your deck but also you want it to be a fun game. One of the reasons I don't really want to be someone who plays like super control I guess.

And so much comes down to the group. I anchor what is explicitly the lower mid-range table at the LGS. Bring us your jank, your crap, your thrown-together fifteen minutes ago in the car. At another table, that deck would have been met with less revulsion.

Me either but I also don't have the money or desire to try anything close to CEDH. I just want to be able to hang out and enjoy playing magic with some nerds and trying some weird decks and not just seeing the same 3 different decks that everyone plays
