I bought '06 at launch for my 360. It was the first game I'd picked up that generation where I thought 'this is bad, and I do not want to play anymore of it' roughly 30 minutes after sticking the disc in.

Would you believe it if I said time has been even less kind?

I played Bubsy 3D the other night. It's clunky, but perfectly controllable and readable in its own weird way. It was developed concurrently with Mario 64 - two teams trying to solve the same problem in isolation. Nintendo would go on to set the standard for all 3D action games, Bubsy, not so much.

Sonic '06 came out a decade after Mario 64. Seven years after Sonic Adventure. Yet it feels like the team had literally never played a 3D game before.

I'm emulating the game via a fork of RPCS3 right now, so there may be additional quirks added via software interpretation, but I died 5 or 6 times on the first stage alone, and I'd venture that none of these deaths were my fault.

Most heinous are the on rails 'boost' sections, where, if Sonic doesn't snap to an exact pixel of geometry, scripted events just don't work. I ran round a loop, and then because my position had shifted slightly, Sonic just missed the launch pad to get to the next platform and fell in the sea.
