Because people complained that the people they got to fill the dwarfs' role in the story looked nothing like the dwarfs in the original classic.

So, yeah, blame the purists for this remake instead now giving us something ImageMovers Digital would've puked up were that studio still around.

I'm not an LP but from what I can gather Disney was being Disney and basically using PD as the Hollywood equivalent to making the one Black person in the office the diversity consultant & throwing away all their ideas

There's certainly a pattern of Hollywood erasing disabilities rather than meaningfully engaging with their (or the disabled actors who would like to be cast--see also, live action Toph's casting, which was A Choice after the Sokka bullshit)
