NYC has a maximum speed limit of 25 mph. It was put into place to reduce traffic deaths.

Enforcement is shaky though. Don’t the cameras just turn off at night? Or was that red lights?

European cities have settled on 30kph (~18mph) as the appropriate speed limit in built up areas.

TBH, a lot of cyclists in NYC break the speed limit, which also applies to them. They have severely injured pedestrians, and they often do not stick around.

I think traffic lights are on all the time. NYC is one city where there are always people out & businesses open. (Living in DC area it's shocking how it is a ghost town, even at 10 pm.)
There are cameras all over NYC...I don't know if you can go anywhere without a security camera recording you.

Ref light cameras turn off at certain hours I thought. I don’t live there though, so I wouldn’t know if that changed.

I have no clue b/c I don't live there anymore. But, things did not shut down b/c so much happens at night.

I miss the liveliness of that city. I felt safer there than most other places (whether that was deserved or not)

I'm unsure about speed cameras.
I think the speed limit was decided based on impact w/ a human. Above 25 mph, it's usually fatal.
