The older I get, the more I think the basic division in human beings is, “I suffered, therefore I want nobody else to suffer” vs “I suffered, so I want EVERYONE else to suffer”.

Been telling people I know for years. Government workers get federa holidays off? “That’s not fair I should get that to” NOT “that’s not fair if i can’t have that they shouldn’t either”
Now it’s WFH. Everyone should support it. If you have to go it means lighter traffic.
Or, for people who don't necessarily recognize themselves in the latter category: "I suffered, therefore I want 'the people who *I* think ought to be suffering instead' to suffer (and damn the resulting collateral damage)"
Yep. Couldn't agree more. Add in the political views of trying to do something good even if it's future good vs No, not on my tax $$ and only for people who look/think like me.

many folks who fall into the everyone else must suffer category can be talked around with the right reframe.
The problem is that there is an unending propaganda blast making it hard to fight against.
I’m privileged and haven’t suffered therefore I refuse to believe the system leads to widespread suffering.
