Sad. Likely a combination of parents working 2 jobs to make ends meet as well as parents that don't take an interest in helping their kids learn. My kids could read, write, count by the time they hit kindergarten.

This is great! Kids that didn’t go to pre-k or Head Start are often overwhelmed by the large classroom size and structure that they find in kindergarten.

So kids who went to daycare or stayed home with parents as opposed to pre-k will come in ready for a classroom environment 1/2

More districts need to do this as a means of kindergarten readiness.

It’s also worth nothing kindergarten is far more rigorous than it used to be. Kids are expected to do a lot more by the end of kindergarten than they used to be. 2/2

One other thing, kindergartners in the US are asked to a lot more than in the EU. The EU focuses on social-emotional learning in early childhood, the US focuses on hard skills. EU kids don’t need prep.

Kids in the EU actually end up doing better academically than US kids in the long term though.
