It’s NOT an entitlement. It’s OWED to us. But remember, the $ taken from our paychecks when we were working paid the benefits of seniors who were collecting then. The $ for us now comes from the paychecks of those working now. Raising the limit on those dedux would go far to stabilize the system.
Right, and then some. But the word “entitlement” has acquired connotations that critics use to make the benefits seem like the government is giving us a gift, or being generous.
That’s why I don’t use that word. It’s a government debt, and, by law, is owed to us.
I sure as hell know I earned mine. Back in the day I said I sure could use that money now. Now I'm saying, thank you Uncle Sam for not listening. I'm living on the fruits of "my" labor.
Saying S.S. is an entitlement is like saying a taxpayer shouldn't get their tax refund money back. Cutting any benefits would be stealing from Americans.
That’s so right. We paid federal taxes, statetax, city tax, Medicare, saved for our 401k, and paid into SS our whole careers. And this administration says we’re taking it away, so they can get fat? No way!!
We are entitled to those funds. Just because the entire Republican Party has never opened a dictionary doesn't mean we have to encourage their misinterpretation of a word like entitlement. An entitlement is something we are entitled to.
Suppose I informed you (as I have had to do - repeatedly) that SS is, in fact, textbook definition of entitlement?? Don't get it twisted - words matter.
Correct. I did not wish to bog down in a discussion of mandatory versus discretionary statutory language (though I easily could have and, in fact, doing so was a large part of my career)
We can start an entire new web site about how under-educated the populace is about the actual workings of our government - not to mention an equal tome dedicated to the subject of the lack of financial savvy. The things we think important I still don't understand (paraphrasing, Reeling In The Years)
To be honest, it took me close to a year to do a really deep dive on Social Security. There is such an enormous amount of info on their website. Incredibly valuable.
It's a retirement plan not a ponzi! If our contributions had been handled correctly there would still be a surplus... when Reagan robbed it, and used the funds for other shit, SSA had a surplus!
I’m that sense of the word you’re right . The thing is the republicans don’t understand that because none of them pay in . They get set pensions after I think it’s 2 terms .
repuglicans manipulated the meaning of "entitlement" to imply it's some government freebie given to fictitious people who arrogantly *expect* something for nothing (thus they erroneously act "entitled"). Soc Sec is not an outright gift from the government. The money should've been wisely re-invested
Another big problem is the cap that limits the amount that the rich have to pay. Do away with the cap and make them pay their fair share and re-invest the surplus.
Agreed. But the day might come when bureaucrats will decree that the recipients haven't been expanding the Soc Sec fund enough (even though not our fault). But you're right, maybe if they couldn't touch it, at least it could grow interest somewhere.
It is an entitlement. It is a trust fund into which we paid a large portion of our salaries our entire lives with the understanding that we ARE ENTITLED TO IT WHEN WE RETIRE.
Americans are getting more pissed every day, who knows what might happen. DUMP/MAGATS/MUSKKK might want to watch all the rallies and protests. The crowds are not getting smaller.
If the Republicans want to call Social Security an entitlement - well I want to remind them that yes we are entitled to OUR MONEY. We paid in to it and so did our employers. They have some nerve implying that we’re mooching off of them.

An entitlement is just that: a benefit that every American is entitled to because it's codified by law and funded by the taxpayers for the direct benefit of the American people. 'Entitlement' isn't a four-letter word. Don't buy into the Trump GOP's idiotic rhetoric! Remember, they're all morons.
Yes it is an entitlement! I am entitled to it because the government took part of every paycheck I ever earned with the promise that I would receive a check from the day I retired until the day I die. Entitlements are not giveaways. They are earned!
And, unlike those rich people in Congress and the administration, I paid a percentage of every single dollar I ever earned. I never got anywhere close to the cutoff for not having to pay.
I'm aware. The same thing happened to my father. He was switched from CSRS to FERS and the government only reimbursed social security for that prior time. He paid much more into CSRS while trying to raise 5 children. Don't feel sorry for Congress.
But isn't our paying into the system for years what makes Social Security an "entitlement"? Truly we have to reclaim that word -- "entitlement" -- from right-wing, hyper-capitalist pirates.
It should be,it should fund nothing but what it was designed to do,except it was used by several republican politicians to fund their wars, now they want to fund tax breaks for the wealthy. Screw them they can pay taxes like the other 99 percent.
It is NOT a benefit, per se. It IS an entitlement. I.E. that to which we have an established RIGHT. Benefits are gifts inferred or given by another:
an advantage or profit gained from something. (OA Dictionary) - aka an advantage given by another
You are 100% incorrect. You are wrong! The correct word is entitlement.. If you pay into the system, you are entitled to benefits! You have earned the benefits. Thus the term entitlements!
Well a judge has blocked pee-on from getting our private info so I’ve written and called my senators and congress. If I could go protest at the Capitol I would .

If you are entitled to something it means it is rightfully yours.
