I do not like the term visual novel being used for Japanese style graphic adventure games such as Snatcher, Phoenix Wright, Danganronpa, etc. so much like how STG is short for ShooTing game I say we call them Japanese AdVenture games or JAV for short to avoid confusion

But seriously, it did bother me that everything gets labeled as a VN when it's really not. Heck, an obscure indie puzzle adventure game, Shuugoku no Seventh Heim, is labeled as a visual novel and you directly control the character on the field.
The visual novel mechanic is an efficient way to do story cutscenes where people talk, so it's difficult to draw bright lines
