But the palette for that game is notably more muted than its GBA successors

Ohhhhh it’s really good!

The Final Fantasy brand recognition pushed Tactics and Tactics Advance over Ogre Battle series, but they share a number of themes (and staff).

The branching storylines I think are more interesting than the strictly linear one of FFT… if not as well written individually.
