There's 48 treasures in total and each climb of the mountain you get to keep ONE, although all collected during the climb count towards your rank.

Getting the crown and "Champion" rank requires a minimum of 29 climbs if you do them all perfectly. Collecting 100% of all treasures is 48 climbs.

Although understandable. I think what they were going for here, given that the game is meant for kids, is something whereby every time they sit down to play it for a little there'll be something new to experience, regardless of how minor, thus why it takes so many playthroughs to see EVERYTHING. :B

Yeah, they wanted their games to go on foreeeeeeever. More bang for the parent's buck, more math practice while keeping kids engaged. Some of their games for older kids have reasonable endings, though. Maybe they thought older kids wouldnt put up with the grind, or wanted a more complete experience?
