By the early 2000s, Martin McDonagh had established himself as one of Ireland’s best young playwrights with The Leenane Trilogy and The Aran Islands Trilogy. Saying that he had “respect for the history of films”, McDonagh was keen to get into moviemaking.

McDonagh visited Bruges one weekend, with the intention of meeting up with a lady for date. She didn’t show up but McDonagh was struck by the beauty of the city, later saying “It was so cinematic. So gorgeous.”

McDonagh said despite the beauty of Bruges, he found himself slightly bored. And so formed an idea for a movie: a character who had to go to Bruges but found it dull rather than stunning. The lead turned into two hitmen and McDonagh fleshed out a screenplay, calling it In Bruges.

The screenplay went unbought and was featured in the 2006 Blacklist as one of the best unmade scripts of the year. Because of this, Focus Features became interested and struck a deal with McDonagh to not just write but also direct his first feature.

In casting protagonist Ray, McDonagh always wanted Colin Farrell. He met Farrell at the Hudson Hotel in NYC, and Farrell told him to find someone else, saying “The script is too good. I come with baggage.” McDonagh replied “Okay. Noted. I still want you” and Farrell was cast.

Except for one flashback scene, Ray wears a single outfit for the whole film. He removes his jacket and unbuttons his shirt, but never changes his clothes. Second lead Ken, on the other hand, makes several wardrobe changes.

I was in Bruges in 2007 (scarily 18 years ago) and was surprised they still had Xmas decorations up - to discover later that these were there for the film. I like the film for its humour but it is too violent for me to watch very often
