Every so often I hear a take that makes me wonder if the critic just never stopped to talk with other human beings. I remember sitting at a panel about monsters in literature and what they mean that ended with "...and that's why no story can have the ghost of a monster." She just seemed so certain.
(This was at the height of Kelly Link and Karen Russell's popularity, so I was reading a story about the ghost of a plesiosaur while waiting for the panel to begin.)
