People remember the red ring of death but seem to have forgotten how much of a pain it was to keep updating the number on those first generation models every month.

For the benefit of the other commentors, it got called that because Microsoft didn't want to pit the "XBoX 2" against the "PS3" because they thought consumers would assume higher number = better. It's the Slackware version number strategy.
