All of Ari Aster’s films feel like big doorstopper novels. The Witch, definitely. And The Wicker Man might already be based on a novel but I’m not going to check.
I don’t think this is what you meant, but this question got me thinking about how a lot of the old Cormam shockers (Dementia 13, etc) felt like pulp novels.
The 2018 version of Suspiria with Tilda Swinton, without a doubt. To me, it feels like a masterful adaptation of a horror novel from a turbulent past instead of a reimagining of another classic horror film
