The first Sea Fury prototype was actually a semi-navalised Hawker Fury with an arrestor hook but non-folding wings. The Fury had been developed for the RAF, but that order was cancelled when the war ended. It was several months before a full spec prototype was available.

On 9th August 1952, a flight of four Sea Furies from 802 NAS were attacked by MiG-15s near Pyongyang. One of the North Korean jets was shot down, and 2 others damaged, without loss to the FAA.

Sea Furies of the Royal Canadian Navy, which operated the type until replacement by McDonnell Banshees in 1956. The Royal Netherlands Navy also operated Sea Furies until 1959.

Pakistan was the largest Sea Fury export customer, acquiring 5 T.61 trainers and 93 FB.60s, all ‘non-navalised’, which were operated until 1963. Other nations to use land-based Furies were Iraq, Egypt, Burma and even Cuba, where they were used against the Bay of Pigs invasion.
