There's the 'full' membership or the 'public' membership; the only difference seems to be proposing papers. Note the 'public' member can't present even if invited (but non-members can if invited? That's weird.)

Outside JBL access why should I renew? Just because I've been a member since 2004? (2/2)

There’s also no penalty to letting it lapse and then renewing it later, if in a year or two you do want to go to the annual meeting

I let mine lapse a few years ago after I'd been out of academia for a few years, asking myself the same questions. Haven't really missed it, though occasionally I get the itch to go to SBL/AAR.
