Xbox marketing “what is our product?” While also saying you don’t need said product while also changing their definition of what the product is that you don’t need… feels like a strange choice.
PlayStation, the Xbox one is overly complicated to non gamers and tech savvy people who call all consoles, atari or Nintendo. The PlayStation one is simple and straight to the point and well, nostalgia is a powerful thing.
Sadly they both are in different spaces and positions.. I think Xbox DOES have to do that. After Xbox One, Xbox lost. Things have to change ppl outside the Xbox loyal aren't gonna buy the console
Xbox should have realized positions can change if you put forth an effort. On one hand Xbox didn't do very well last generation selling only 60 million and cementing a legacy of failure. On the other hand Nintendo sold only 12 million in the same gen and is now eating Xbox and Playstations lunches.
Nintendo can't leave the gaming industry while MS can & won't affect them. The Xbox team works with that knowledge and must expand. I WISH Xbox was what hardcore want it to be since I have been with Xbox since 2001 but I have come to understand and accept the reality of the position they are in.
Yes but we must live in the reality that Nintendo doesn't do anything but make games. Xbox is a team under the behemoth Microsoft which does way more things than games and at one point contemplated the reason they even where in the gaming industry. Two different companies.
Both ads suck. Xbox has the adventage of crossplay, while with sony being locked on the playstation. So XBox has a good selling point.
Sony on the other side doesn't tell you why you should buy their system, they just evoking emotions.
Using emotions may work for most people, I don't like them.
MS ad may not tell you in your face to buy xbox right now, and they don't need to since XBox is more a platform and not only a device you can play on. So this ad makes at least sense in this case.
PlayStation’s and it’s not even close. Xbox marketing teams are not good at communicating a product and giving people reasons why they would want that product. I say this as an Xbox guy.
Interesting reading the contrasting replies here.
The current Xbox marketing might not be flawlessly executed, but at least it's clearly communicating their pivot in strategy that's been going on for quite some time now.
Sony's ad is more generic, (purposefully) ignoring that the consoles (1/2)
no longer resonate with the youngest players the way they used to.
So to sum up, Xbox is working on their multi platform pivot while Sony tries to make the parents think their kids would have a good time with PlayStation. (2/2)
The playstation one is a better advert, it plays on the emotions of the possible parent and rekindles thoughts of their own childhood. The Xbox one is honestly confusing to the average consumer.
Xbox see's the whole industry not just a small little chunk dedicated to a single plastic box I'll take that over people being stuck in the past afraid of more people playing games how they want where they want.
One is clinging to tradition hoping it will never change, the other is trying to push a future that isn’t here quite yet. This could be another Xbox One moment, or they could be right this time. They certainly have the studios to make it happen.
I’d say Xbox is more daring, more conceptual. Maybe a bit divisive too. People are still very fond of their little boxes. :)
PlayStation is probably more conventional, but it’s so well put, and the nostalgia factor so efficient…
Xbox’s vision is weighed down by their own console and the fact they’re not a can’t miss platform. Too many games either getting moneyhatted by Sony or because of market share just skip Xbox altogether. They need to work on making the Box desirable
Yeah to be fair I’m not like a marketing person but I’ve always thought they start with big ideas which often come across as vision-like. Sigh, I guess that’s why those people make the big $$
Even as as a lifelong gamer and Xbox fan, I have no idea what the Xbox ad is trying to get me to buy. It is just selling the brand without any implied call to action.
I have not, actually. Every console I own I've bought myself. My daughter loved getting a Switch for Christmas a few years ago, but hardly a defining moment for her.
Like I said, maybe just me. I think "tradition" is a push, frankly. But eh, it's semantics and marketing.
I distinctly remember the Christmases when we got a new console. I remember SNES, N64, and PS2. My Dad passed away last August and it’s part of my internal slideshow of memories when I’m in my thoughts about him.
To be fair I haven’t felt that way about consoles in years. I bought a new Xbox every generation and I get less and less excited for them. Same with PlayStation. Honestly the Xbox is just a way for me to play my games. So if for instance, my tv was an Xbox I’d love that, or my phone, tablet etc…
Not for nothing, but as much as I love my PlayStation 1, my origin story with it is less happy Christmas gift memory but more like bad decisions with a best buy credit card, lol.
To be fair I think Xbox has figured out this generation that game sells matter more than console sales since they barley make any money off the console. Which is why they will still do hardware releases but learned they can make more selling games
Xbox marketing has been shocking for a long time unfortunately, even simple stuff like naming there consoles is done terribly. We need them to get their act together so Sony has some good competition and we the gamers get the best from them both!

Love both consoles though 🎮

The entire "This is an Xbox" marketing still sound so stupid to me
PlayStation is probably more conventional, but it’s so well put, and the nostalgia factor so efficient…
I’d vote for PlayStation though!

like chill guys is not like xbox series sold 10 million

And Xbox advertising Oreos
vs.
“Make awesome memories with our products”

Xbox's isn't even an ad. It's at best some aspirational nonsense they're trying to manifest into being real
I feel much more connected to opening an N64 and playing Super Mario 64 as a kid than any arguments about cloud gaming or easy access.
I assume people who had a PlayStation as a kid feel the same way.
"Hey, make your children happy and buy them a playstation for xmas. Y'know, like how your folks bought you yours as a kid"
The other says
"Don't worry about buying Xbox because you can probably play the games on something else you own"
🤷🏻♂️
