One of my wife's coworkers, a white guy in his 30s, used "bet" more than 25 years ago. He said that it had been around for quite a while in AAVE, not that he seemed to have much first-hand knowledge.
"Bet" was already being appropriated by white guys in their 30s by the late 1990s. I guess it came around again in popularity, but these youths would be horrified to know that they are using their parents' slang.
Our tween son hates it when we use his generation's slang. There is no easier way to get him to stop using a slang word than for us to use it unironically.
