Screen readers! It's an accessibility feature that reads your screen and basically, similar to things like text-to-speech. Normally, this reads all images as just "image," but the alt text box gives an alternative text box to describe the image. Hold on it might be easier with an example
For example, this image is largely text so relatively easy to add alt text for. That, paired with the normal text in this post, gives people with visual impairments a better understanding of what's in the image
If you'd consider using alt text, it's best to try to describe what's generally going going on in the image. For example, I'd use for the above picture something like "Xerxes from Pandora Hearts sitting on a bed, wrapped in a blanket."
