These frogs already had some form of melanin production in their genetics? Would this be some form of epigentic response to the increased radiation?

These frogs already have some colour variability in nature (including dark individuals, although in very small proportion). Natural selection linked to the protective role of melanin should have increased that proportion to what we can see now.
