The alternate take I've seen thrown around is that we're still on the path to Starfleet. Remember, even in the Prime Timeline it got way worse so humanity as a whole could learn from their mistakes and be better.

80s have a lot of movies about this. This type of darkness was already here, growing and organizing.

TNG have literally a dark admiral each season. And DS9 have the episode "paradise lost".
