In case anyone's wondering, the goal is to eventually make a little city scene with gameboy-ish limitations,so as much tile reuse as I can, and only 3 colours per tile (I won't use transparency as a 4th colour)
something like that for instance (still extremely WIP, nothing's set in stone at all at this point, I'm just drawing funny shapes. There's a good chance I won't reuse any of those tiles in the future)
It actually is thanks to a GBStudio gamejam game that I got on the Undertale Yellow team :)
It was quite a while ago (2019), so the engine had a few issues to iron out (one of which was fixed just before the jam's deadline), but I'd love to revisit it someday
Something that I find particularly helpful is adding a lot of contrast to my piece, maybe that might help? If I look at it far away some of the details can sorta blur together. 🌝
I DEFINITELY need to keep that in mind! I'm not used to using multiple 4 colour palettes on different 8 by 8 tiles. I usually either restrict myself to 4 colours (especially for the big piece) or forgo the colour limit when making tiles
Yeah, for this piece in particular, ESPECIALLY because there's only 3 colors, I'd make the difference in shades between each color further apart. As you can see, I raised the contrast on your image and it's a lot more visually readable! After vs Before!
Oh yeah, absolutely! these were just what I used in my workflow (I always end up choosing palettes VERY late)
I think the biggest challenge will be matching the palettes between tiles. I can use up to 8 if I kinda want to abide by GB rules, so contrast and colour choices will have to be on point!
I DON'T KNOW!!!! But it looks right to me as a compromise between details, tile sizes and everything else, so I'll think I'll keep it and call that my artstyle (okay, I might do an effort eventually)

Ir keep the 4th for shadows only

(not me suffering from the same, not at all)
but I definitely need to look up refs, I have huge shortcomings when it comes to tiles and environments and I need to fix that!
I can't wait to draw more tiny houses, buildings and cars
