Ginkgo Leaf Drop Day - the few days when all the ginkgo trees in an area turn color and drop their leaves - has arrived in the Bluegrass about 2 weeks late. I’m in NE Ohio, we had the same two week delay which also changed my temp + light theory. We also had a mild winter, warm spring and about two weeks early for blooming/bud-break. It’s interesting and scary lol

That's certainly true for trees of most species - location, genetic background - play a big role in leaf drop scheduling. But ginkgo is different, with a much stricter leaf drop schedule that we don't really understand.

In most trees, secondary chemicals like the butyric acid in ginkgo seeds increase in concentration with stress, such as insect attacks or drought.

We had a large ginkgo at our old house. We waited in anticipation for the leaf drop each year. Miss the tree and the yearly surprise; don’t so much miss the smell during occasional years (though oddly not every year).
