I live in Newton MA, an affluent, liberal city of 90,000 odd very educated people

And the number of people who drive giant SUVs is astonishing
And the number of older people without kids who add giant extensions on to their already large houses is astonishing

So we are partly to blame

I live in Nashville, which has a lot of people in med research and healthcare. The number of gargantuan SUVs and trucks I see driving into Vanderbilt every morning makes me wonder what they tell their students about the interactions between environmental issues and public health...

My kids attended Vanderbilt summer camps and we spent those days exploring your natural areas, which are astonishing. Nashville could be a gem of sustainable living if it paid more attention to nature and less to SUVs, but you all drive to work. Nashville has a chapter in my first book.

There's good energy around improving public transportation here, I have a lot of hope for changes from the recent ballot initiative. We also got free bus passes for TSU grad students and are putting together educational materials on sustainable living in the city, so we're making progress

Good! The bus passes are a good start. Nashville is a good size and location to restore Amtrak, which the freight railroads managed to kill in 1979.
