Born in Rathmines, Dublin, the son of an artist who painted animals, he was taught how to paint & draw from an early age. He entered the RHA Schools in 1876 & was already winning medals by 1877.

His talent was recognised & he went on to study in Antwerp. There he won the Taylor Prize in 1881 & again in 1882. The prize had allowed him to travel to Belgium & expand his knowledge.

From Antwerp he went on to paint in Brittany. That part of France was a magnet to Irish artists including Roderic O’Conor & Joseph Kavanagh. There he was exposed to Impressionist landscape painting.

In 1884 he travelled on to England. By the early 1890s he returned to Ireland permanently & practised his art, painting both portraits & landscape studies. He had a large studio at 7 St Stephen’s Green.
