Their excuses are usually to suggest that he’s fighting a conservative hierarchy, or he’s trying to take the people with him etc & various other ideas that centre on him being a good & lovable man. Such apologia relies on ignorance of his role as sole arbiter of the RC Church.

Ironically, in castigating the US govt he talks of the humanity of refugees like this - “the infinite and transcendent dignity of every human person”. If he believes that, it is astonishing that he would leave out that group most marginalised, & indeed most transcendent, - trans & non-binary ppl.

Is he interested enough to be transphobic? I don’t think so. Are his actions trans/homophobic? Yes. I’m not an apologist for him, but sometimes small people can rise up to meet great injustice. He has a great position in Christianity, which he has diminished.
