As recently as 1998-2008 one of the most beloved characters on British & Irish TV was a trans woman, Hayley Cropper on Coronation St. The soap would find it hard to have a trans character today given Labour & Tory hatred of trans ppl.

Despite the vast majority of people having no issue with trans people two decades ago, now the papers have changed that. Up to 1000 anti-trans articles are published each month in the UK media!

It’s amazing, in conversation, to hear people you know say anti-trans things without realising that they are (1) not true & (2) far right rhetoric. The media have sold ‘emotional’ logic rather than actual facts. The same methods were used against Jews, Roma & LGBTQ ppl in the 1930s.

It’s insane. Sometimes I explain it & then weeks or months later they are back saying it again. It’s astonishing the fervour the media has in printing far right claptrap & how it’s absorbed. The only way around it is when ppl meet trans ppl.

20 years ago, Nadia Almada, a trans woman, won big brother in the UK with about 4 million votes. She was completely accepted by the public. The swing backwards is crazy.

I think Hayley is a better example as the viewership for Corry back then was phenomenal & across all age groups, especially older. She was portrayed as the sensible decent moral person in the show. Her impact was dramatic & much wider than BB [where the viewership was younger I think]

No doubt on viewership and demographic. Point taken. To be fair to Nadia,she is an actual trans woman presented unfiltered to the public & she won BB by the largest margin ever at the time. We're on the same page that trans on TV was a thing 20 years ago & noone was burning down the C4/ITV studios.

Newspapers used to make money. Newspaper Barron was a thing. The paid for classified listings and announcements, for everything from jobs to dates, to larger adds, bankrolled newspapers large and small. The advent of free listing sites like Craigslist & FBMarketplace undermined that income model.

It still wasn’t the point. If you look at any of the old newspaper barons, it was all about influence & power. I’m speaking specifically of national ones. The UK ones are in trouble, in general & so they drive this horrible hate-click model.

I would argue that making money was/is always the point. Look at Merdoch. When the income stream of adverts/classifieds was undermined by the internet then other forms of engagement were required in order to sell papers. And that’s when making click-bait headlines became a thing.

It's soul destroying. Filling the air waves and newspapers with so much bs it's hard to sift through it to enable us to get to the real news. Many just dont even try. As for the scale of sychophancy from many it's mind boggling. We weren't taught it at school had to learn that myself.
