I hosted meetings, both before the law was passed and after this program was implemented, attended by Minnetonka School District Admin, School Board members, Nutritionists, MN Dept of Health, School District Social Workers, and local non-profits. 2/6

At the first meeting, one of the social workers shared that more than 105 children were coming to Minnetonka Middle School East each morning without having had breakfast. Even if the non-profits funded the cost of the breakfasts, there was no FDA food available without this program. 3/6

If we reintroduce qualification requirements, we will loose many of the social and food nutrition benefits of a school wide program. Forcing children to identify themselves as needing assistance, requiring parents to fill out forms, segregates students. Some will choose to go hungry. 4/6

There is also a cost of administering, tracking and adding a check out process for each student for each meal.

Prior to this program, one of the topics of each monthly meeting of local non-profits was finding money to pay down some of the kids’ lunch account tabs. 5/6

Children that come to school are in our care, we need to feed their minds, and their bodies. It is not an “extra”. We don’t try to figure out who can afford to pay for a bus ride, for books, a desk, or heat.

Don’t take us backwards under the false promise that it will mean money for education. 6/6
