The Great Depression - Before Smoot-Hawley was signed, mere talk of tariffs spooked buyers, triggering falling exports, industry contraction, layoffs, and a market crash. The Great Depression wasn’t just sparked by the Act—it was born from tariff fears that ignited a devastating chain reaction.
It would be nice to see this pointed out more often. Instead, we get people that should know better, waxing poetic about the genius of Musk and Trump and the axe they are taking to every facet of our government.
Problem is, there are people in government now who think we should shrink the size of government even to 1/30th of its current size and think that would be something to celebrate.
