That still leaves them with a >50 PE ratio which is an insane overvaluation. They're clearly not a growth company anymore, their sales are now consistently declining year over year. They should be in the 5-10x range like any other legacy automaker, and worth in the $20-40 range.

Edsel was just a terrible marketing decision of one product line. It was ugly but it wasn’t a bad car and it certainly didn’t bring down Ford. Pinto was also a single model failure.

According to Wiki, the Edsel flop cost FoMoCo $250M, or $2.66B in 2024 dollars. The current F market cap is $38B. So no, it’s not exactly analogous to TSLA losing 50%, but it was a costly mistake. Pinto did irreparable damage to F tho. I know some people who still won’t buy one cuz “let em burn.”

You can compare Pinto to Ralph Nader’s attacks on Corvair “Unsafe at Any Speed”. Both models died as a result. Both Ford & GM have profits and reasonable P/Es and can weather such storms, Tesla has always been a bubble waiting to burst.
