Christopher Nolan was reportedly interested in directing a James Bond movie after doing #Tenet but he wouldn't have gotten a say on the film’s final cut

He went and directed #Oppenheimer instead

What tier is Sam Mendes in? The good-but-not-great-tier if I were to guess.

I find it funny that he got to make these very imperial Bond films with great cinematographers with all of his middlebrow sensibilities.

Yeah, he's definitely a more acclaimed, prestigious director than the other filmmakers who had tackled the series prior but he's hardly a top-tier talent. He was also coming off some duds when he did Skyfall so it's not like he was at the height of his powers.

He's smart and clever enough to make Bond movies that look smart and clever but not actually smart and clever enough to make smart and clever Bond movies. (I, unlike you, am quite fond of Skyfall but I haven't seen it since theatres.)

If I got to make whatever I wanted in Hollywood, I'd like to try and make a kind of Bond/Indiana Jones-like action movie, only with a new IP. Don't know if I, a disciple of Ingmar Bergman, has the chops for it, but I'd like to try.
