While previous research in interruptions has focused on gendered interruptions patterns (which is very important), I argue that there are other strategic incentives why politicians interrupt each other.

Specifically, experts on the same topic should interrupt each other more, opposition parties should make more use of interruptions and the career status of MPs (first term MP & frontbenchers) should influence their likelihood to interrupt/be interrupted.

To test my expectations I use data from the German Bundestag 2017-2021. I estimate the likelihood of observing an interruption in each dyad of MPs from different parties.

I find that topic experts (indicated by shared speaking on the same topics) are more likely to interrupt each other. Opposition MPs interrupt more frequently, both government MPs and other opposition MPs. New MPs are less likely to interrupt and frontbenchers are equally likely to be interrupted.
