I worked at a music store waaaay back when “How You Remind Me” came out and it was a memorable time. I was there about 3.5 years and that was one of the most searched for songs that came out while I was there. ‘Hey Ya’ was prob the only other song that came near it.

"This Is How You Remind Me" was the last time a "rock" song hit #1 on Billboard.

Clearly it was a huge hit and they deserve credit for that. And correlation is not causation.

But I do wonder if the way this track got overplayed at the time accelerated a cultural shift in musical tastes 🤔

Yeah I was kinda like "oh so the hatred IS justified." I never liked them because I always thought they sounded like boring country metal fusion with distortion. Imagine "looking at a photograph" with a cowboy hat, a Southern accent and an acoustic guitar.

to me, nickleback isn’t bad, just a bit forgettable. i can groove to their music but i’ll never remember it well enough to tie back to them, aside from the memed on songs like photograph, but there are a lot of bands like that, and most don’t sell 50 million, so 🤷‍♀️
