I wish they would learn from it. I don’t listen to rap music, however I thought the performance was brilliant. Now I want to dig deeper into his lyrics.
Same way all halftime shows before JLo’s were never for me. I found them boring lowbrow concert medleys. She raised the bar & added deeper meaning. Now Kendrick & Samuel Jackson decided to make it a full on musical theatre journey. Amazing. I grew up poor in NYC & it spoke to my 90s urban trauma
Just because you didn’t “get it” doesn’t make it a bad show. He is a true artist.
But don’t shame the people that didn’t enjoy it or understand what was going on. Not everyone follows all the drama. And it’s not everyone’s taste in music. Nothing wrong with that.
I thought it was an interesting show, I understood the messages and I appreciated the middle fingers. It was subversive. I think it’s a case of expecting one thing and getting something else that turns some people off, most HT shows are maybe a bit more upbeat and energetic. But also, racists. 😎
The reaction to people that do not have the cultural background is amazing. Some are very interested in learning, then watching the show again. Then there are the ones who refuse to learn the history of black Americans, so they are willfully ignorant
Old white dude walked in and said “I couldn’t understand them; should have done 50-60s music”. I didn’t have the energy. I love all the nods to the drama. Getting a peek into that world is fun. Did enjoy.
So I disagree with this. This kind of analysis is something I am not good at. I thought the performance was great but I have enjoyed watching other people’s analysis pointing out meanings of things and then rewatching it. The problem is that a lot of people don’t want to understand the meaning
That is true and I am very sad they didn’t show the black flags w the Kara walker imagery. You are right people do not want to be educated. My hope is that their angry leads to curiosity and research and hopefully to growth.
I think the fact you understand there is a message being conveyed even if you need a bit of extra help understanding the complexities is plenty good tbh
So here's the thing. Kendrick's tracks are novels each. If you already know them the performance makes more sense. But if this is your first time it's gonna take a minute to digest it all. Even knowing the tracks there's SO MUCH going on. Epic.
After seeing some of the twitter grifters complaining, I came to that realization too. It wasn't for the people who want everything to be about themselves.
I also think that's an idea that needs to be developed as a part of the resistance.
Yes! Representation matters and there has been a tradition of taking things from other cultures and making them more palatable to white people. Instead of being valued in their original forms and purposes.
It’s not my kind of music but neither is Taylor Swift. But I can appreciate a good dance routine, the high energy and the f-you with that amazing flag.
It was for everybody, but not everybody wants to “get it”. And not everybody could truly understand it - and that’s ok, because not everybody was meant to
Can I disagree? I feel like it was a totally intentional production for everyone, and the creators all knew exactly what they were doing. They knew people wouldn’t like it, that was half (the majority???) the intended audience. Absolutely brilliant.
Someone at work who’s an older woman was complaining about the halftime show and my boss literally said those words that it wasn’t for her. I was a little bit stunned, but I wanted to give him a high five.
Maybe we should try to help people understand instead of being twats to people who don’t. It’s an important message we shouldn’t just be going “fuck you you don’t get it” to people about.
I’ve given thought to the fact that all people do on here is rip apart people who could totally get this whole thing with a simple explanation. And my thought was that it’s stupid and counterproductive. We don’t need more people like you living in a bubble tearing down anyone who wants to expand it.
Actually, I believe it was. He did not pander. If people got off their lazy tushes and actually did a bit of research, they'd get it. He might even win some converts. A Minor, for example. Only the pedophiles would object.
i think those are most of the people objecting. they voted for one, half their heroes are one, they accuseeveryonethey hate of it out of insecurity, they all beleive in dominionism... it *was* the pedophiles objecting.
I'm going to be honest. Even though I'm a professional musician, I have an embarrassing deficit of knowledge about pop culture and music, especially rap. That said, I'll immediately head to Youtube to check out the work of an artist I hear about because that's how you go forward in life.
agreed, that video is an incredible explainer for the Drake v. Kendrick beef and the hip-hop culture leading up to that moment. helped me understand the more subtle jabs and double entendres Kendrick made at Drake.
I think all his music history videos are insightful and well done, the examples and points he chooses to emphasize feel fresh even for artists I’m familiar with. And on his B side channel he just posted a video about the half time show!

Made the most of the moment, because everyone knows next year is gonna be, like, Wynona Judd or Kid Rock or something.
When being treated normally feels like oppression - that is privilege.

But his actually had a message and I think that's the main reason they hate it.

I’ve watched it like ten times. 😂

Those are the people whom most needed the message. I am hoping as time goes on it seeps into their hearts, souls and minds.
Maybe they didnt understsnd but understood the target !
Not everyone wants to. And that's okay. It wasn't meant for them.
That's how art works.
