Somebody did this with Mr. Crocket. Said it was Nightmare on Elm Street 4 and was a ripoff….

To me that’s an overly simplified take

Just like “Sinners is pretty much just from Dusk Till Dawn”

I try to notice the references a filmmaker is making, in the case of Sinners its to a lot of great stuff like The Shining, The Thing, Dusk Til Dawn, the painting The Sugar Shack, on and on. The trick is to make it one's own which Ryan Coogler does. I've seen the movie 3 times now.

I saw some Salem’s Lot and Fright Night in there too! Ryan Coogler found so many ways to incorporate uniqueness in a sub genre that has ENDLESS movies

Sidenote -- Even if it was fully derivative (which it is not), the performances that Coogler brought out of that amazing cast elevate the material. I feel like MBJ, Delroy Lindo, and several others might be looking at Oscar nominations for this film.

Also cinematography.

For sure, and Bonnie & Clyde, The Sting, Chinatown, and Miller's Crossing, on and on. And maybe I'm reading my own favorites into it. It's reductive to say it's just like Dusk 'Til Dawn just because it is one genre for the first half and vampire for the second. That's where the similarities end.

It wears its influences on its sleeve and maybe more subtle ones like Oh Brother Where Art Thou or the legend of bluesman Robert Johnson. But the mix is so original and the cast so vibrant, the execution so spot-on that it becomes its own unique thing.

Horror has a long history of pulling from its own lineage. For white artists they are celebrated for that lineage, but what we are seeing with black artists is this being used to disparage them without paying respect to the craft and nuance of the actual work made by those artists.

Agree all around. Most of the reviews I've read have been favorable to glowing. Randos on the internet are going to reveal their biases (racist, sexist, on and on).

What we will remember is that the movie was a hit. And Ryan Coogler will get to make more original films if he wants to.

It really says a lot when people deliberately talk over the fact that these films are original especially because of the culture with it. Neither of the films they're claiming are ripped off have -any- of the layers and nuances Mr. Crocket and Sinners have... but ofc these ppl ignore those things

I was a freshman in college in 1979 enrolled in a creative writing class. Our midterm was a 1500 word story based on a childhood memory. Mine was so good that my professor accused me of plagiarism. It hurts to THIS DAY that white people *automatically* disparage non white triumphs.

What I always had a problem with is the black guy ended up dying first.

Now that trope isn't as prevalent as it used to be but it still pops up.
