Kanzi learned how to communicate using a lexigram board containing over 300 symbols and could understand a lot of spoken English. He was a tremendous research participant and readily engaged in hundreds of trials of experiments, showing impressive aptitude and concentration.

He also defied the odds in many ways- including achieving incredible weight loss in his latter years and surviving into his 40s, an age far older than most male bonobos reach in captivity

I've had the honour of studying Kanzi in several studies, including one just published in @royalsocietypublishing.org where Kanzi was able to report the affective and object based meaning of alarm calls by touching their corresponding lexigram symbols
