To get grants a ‘scientist’ has had to include in the proposal how the project would engage underrepresented individuals, address systemic barriers, and ensure all participants feel welcomed and valued. As if the actual science was going to be affected by that. It needs to stop and now it will.

It will lead to less basic research, and ultimately probably fewer patents all around, as industry fills its R&D pipeline with many ideas originating in the academic setting. Academia is part of a drug development ecosystem, also involving small spinoff biotech companies being bought by pharma.
