So is the lag concept based on letting the guard go and then working to get inside the center as he tries to get to him?

Right, in this clip, because you are getting a scoop from the Guard, the iDL needs to work off the Center.
Again, he got double-scooped (which is not ideal), but his ricochet vertical helps funnel the RB.
Against a regular zone, the iDL would play a true lag or knock-back-fall-back technique.
