Seriously considering picking up extra food like I did at the beginning of covid. Making sure we have rice, dried beans, pasta, canned meat/fish, canned veggies, etc....

I started little by little right after the election.
I figure even if nothing major happens (lockdown or whatever) I still feel good about spending way less in this current economy while I plan my next moves.
Also, not sure if this was said but don’t forget water filter and pitcher.
Also looking at what other things we should have a supply of. We are so used to having access to whatever whenever, and I just honestly think that's going to be put to the test this year.
I did that. I also transfered a big chunk of my 401 to a high yield savings yesterday. These tariffs can put us in a recession or worse and it's all happening fast
Different kinds of rice. Lots of things like cans of green chilies, and coconut milk. Butter. Cheese. Things that I can put away. Now, they have lots of things I would LOVE to try, but....I don't have the space for it.
Yeah, I wanted to go wild with that stuff, but I stocked up on butter and parmesan. Things that I will use but take up not so much room because my freezer space is at a premium! LOL.
Because I'm only one person, I didn't go for the big huge bags of dried goods, like I was contemplating. But I did get bigger bags than I can get in the store, and usually for cheaper! Lots of flour products. GF flour is fucking expensive! If I can get a lot for less, I'm here for it.
Yeah, I was thinking it's just us two. So I won't need as much. I'll probably go for more ready-made stuff, but I probably do need some flour/sugar/etc.
Poking my head in to say that I wish they had 1lb bags of flour. I don’t really use it, so 5 pounds is a ridiculous purchase for me. But having a little on hand would be nice.
I've been ordering from Azure Standard. I have them ship to my house, but their thing is they do "drops" across the country. People love the drops, but I just can't be arsed. https://www.azurestandard.com/
Even though I'm in Canada, I live very lose to the US/CAN border and I've thought about stocking up as well. Because this affects us, especially with the threat of tariffs looming. *sigh*
As if the cost of food wasn't sky high as it is. To prep is to have that extra $$ which we don't have.
I've started "dry canning" so all of my dry goods are now in glass jars with the air sucked out. At least they will last longer...because I'm a fresh food from scratch kind of person....
There is a little machine for wide mouth or narrow mouth jars...when it is done it has removed air and sealed it. I put a paper cupcake liner on top of powders so it doesn't clog in the pump......but, I feel better about it being in sterilized glass jars.......
We went through our house today and had a good hard look at everything we rely on, and what the odds are of shortages, or things becoming untrustworthy due to lack of regulation.
Also bought a ton of veggie and herb seeds, just in case.
We did. Now, all we have to buy for the next 6 months or so is fresh produce, milk, and eggs. I’m praying that I’m over prepared. But I have children to feed. Better safe than hungry.
I know for our household, it's a combination of looming trade war (a lot of people are looking to avoid buying American), and trust.
With what's going on with RFK, deportations, and talk of dropping regulations... A lot of things (food, supplements) won't necessarily be safe / as safe as non-usa.
Canadian here, 2 reasons, first, if we get hit with tariffs, I'll be damned if I buy another thing made in USA if I can avoid it. Second, with government agencies being tasks with health and safety, food in particular, will no longer be able to trust that American made products are safe to consume
I know sounds gross but it can be done. I recommend them for like baking purposes even though they say you can rehydrate and use them like a scrambled egg.
That’s what I’m doing. I’ve been picking up extras for some time now and may even get some large bags of beans and rice from Costco. I’ve already stocked up on tp (Covid trauma), tissues, & first aid supplies. Thankfully, I have enough crafting supplies to last a hundred yrs, so I’m good there. 😄
I’ve slowly been doing it after getting caught during Covid, without enough food. I quickly found out the charities don’t help anyone. I have lots of dry/preserved goods, a freezer full of homemade meals, and protein/complete meal powders. I only have 1-2 months worth, so I need to improve that.
I’m considering in investing in a portable solar panel and battery as well. I already use very little power so everything can be run on it if needed. Stocking up on pet food as well as it seems to be one of the first things that are affected here when there is disasters/shortages etc.
I did a bunch yesterday, plus two new first aid kits. Batteries. Now I have a new list to look for tomorrow. It's expensive, but we'll be ready. Maybe.
If you have the space and ability get a garden going even if its just a container garden so you can at least have the basics in fresh veggies. You can always can or freeze what you can't use at the time for later.

I've been doing that since the election. Also, learning how to bake breads & getting ready to plant a small garden. I live in Vegas, so gardening can be challenging. We're currently below freezing at night & we hit 120 last summer

Think of what you would do or need without electricity and running water
But yeah. Whatever preserved form of fresh you can get...
yeah.
But I will share with yoooouuuuuuuuu!
There are some good lists online for reference.
And I have a dim notion that the MAGAts won't do what the immigrants have done. Because, that's what immigrants are for, amirite?
Let it reach room temp before using to avoid clumps.

Autocorrect? 😛
(Also, HI! Been a long time!)
*hugs back*
Have you learned how to dehydrate meat yet? I'm doing three lbs of beef right now 🤤

I'm not willing to go through that with my cats, over USA issues. Started looking into the options this afternoon.
I'm sure the cats will be thrilled :/
Stockpiling like it's 2020 all over again.
