when people expect him to go up against his board or expect other admin to go head to head with entities that have the potential to unseat him. That doesn't mean he won't fight for academic freedom or against authoritarianism, but he's not going to put himself in direct opposition to his board.

I say that not to critique him necessarily, just to make clear that management is management. Not that everyone in management is inherently evil, just that at some point their choice would have to be to quit, rather than directly oppose, publicly, the power structure that they are part of.

There's a reason I have never wanted to be an administrator, and this is a large part of it. You *can* end up being a meat shield for idiots or villains or both. Sometimes you can use that inside game for good, but often, especially right now, the calculus is WAY off.
